Project Faith - Family - Freedom

Below is my most recent art project.  I decided to take a break from the mosaics and make an enlarged version of the Faith. Family. Freedom logo.  It didn't take as long as I expected and I'm pretty much done with it as of today.  Below are some pictures to show my progress over the past couple weeks.  Feel free to let me know what I should change or add.  Thanks!

LOVE RIDE 2010

I thought I would take a minute to finally write about my experience going to LOVE RIDE 2010, from this past November.  This was the first event I have attended as a HARLEY DAVIDSON owner and I have to say I had a really great time and the fact that it benefitted Autism Speaks was a bonus.   I was in shock half the day because I have never seen so many motorcycles in one place before.  It was truly a site to see.

Pre-Registration was at the Harley-Davidson/Buell of Glendale on Sunday, November 7th at 8:00 am.  I met up with the HAMSTERS (they let me tag along) over at Calamigos Ranch and got a chance to learn a little more about motorcycle clubs, gangs, chapters, etc.  It was really interesting to learn about all the history and etiquette involved in the biking world.  I am looking forward to the next time I get to meet up with them.

It was great to see Jay Leno there doing his thing as he has such a great personality and everyone in the motorcycle world seems to really respect his love and passion for vehicles and bikes.  I should have gotten closer prior to taking this picture but what are you gonna do.

The bike "stunt" show they had was actually pretty cool and the Tri-tip and BBQ chicken was really tasty!!!  During lunch I got a chance to meet some bad-ass biker chicks, that invited us out to a bar after the event.  I can't remember the name of the bar for the life of me, but that's probably becuase I got hammered there off of Marg's and beer.

I will definitely be going again this year!

A Bloggers Centerline Day, or ABCD

4th Place in the Centerline Competition!!!!

Location: Pacific Palisades, CA

I chose this location for my "ABCD" photo because it is a hidden road that no one else knows about.  It's just off of the Pacific Coast Highway and at the top of this road you are able to look over the entire Pacific Ocean.   Driving up this two-lane road I always feel like I am entering a tropical jungle.  There are no street lights, traffic, or lack of serenity.  I feel that the road represents me in a way; it's off the beaten path and original.  It felt necessary to give a "shout out" to HARLEY DAVIDSON, as I am on a 2010 Sportster, Forty-Eight model.  Special thanks to Jon Wald, who assisted creatively.

Hope you like it!

ABCD – May 1st – Mark it on your calendars now

A Bloggers Centerline Day, or ABCD, will take place on Sunday 1st May 2011.

The plan is to inspire as many bloggers as possible to go outside and take a photograph of themselves on this day, wherever they are in the world. The photo can be creative, arty, contain more than one person, be in any type of location and can contain anything else you like. It must however contain the centerline of a road and at least part of you, the blogger.

There are 5 rules....

Rule 1 - the picture must be taken on 1st May 2011.

Rule 2 - the picture must be of yourself, and you must be a person that publishes a blog. You can include whatever else you like in the picture, including other people if you wish.

Rule 3 - the picture must include the centerline of a road.

Rule 4 – you should publish the picture on your blog on 1st May 2011, along with a few words about the picture and why you chose that location or pose.

Rule 5 - when you have posted the picture on your own blog, put a comment on http://garysusatour.blogspot.com/2011/04/abcd-will-you-take-part.html and include in that comment the address of your own blog post containing your own picture.

Gary France will then pick his favourite photos and publish these as being the winners. There will be a prize of $100 awarded to the overall single winner, as chosen by Gary.
In order to get this event known as widely as possible, please copy and paste this posting onto your own blog, including the title. Please do that today!

As a reminder to yourself to take the photo and post it, put an entry into your diary for 1st May 2011.

About Me

Scott Bradley Murphy

Art has played a vital role throughout Scott's life and a means to finding balance and complete fulfillment.  Inspired at an early age by his late Grandmother, Neva Gass, he strives to carry on her legacy and passion for the arts every day.  Rather than following in her footsteps of paint and brush he sought out to discover an unprecedented method that he could call his own while still honoring her attention to detail.  Upon graduating from the University of Iowa and moving out West in the summer of 2006, Scott was thrust into a world gilded with artistic outlets.  It was there in the City of Angels, four years later, that his mind would finally find solace in the form of a Rand McNally roadmap.  Weathered and bent up in the side saddle of his 2010 Harley-Davidson Sportster Motorcycle was the medium he'd been looking for.  Scott's love for motorcycles and artwork alike had previously paralleled but in that moment collided head on.  The concept was simple; artwork made by a motorbike enthusiast for motorbike enthusiasts.  He decided the best way to transform the paper roadmap into the shape of a motorcycle would be by cutting it up into thousands of tiny squares and selecting certain colors within the map to act as his "paint."  In other words, it would be a member of the mosaic family.  His first attempt wasn't perfect but amazed the few that saw it, including Keith Ball, creator of www.bikernet.com, who featured the art piece online.  Roadmap Mosaics was born!

Since then, Scott's Roadmap Mosaics have continued to gain popularity and awareness.  These works have been on display at Cafe Vida in the Pacific Palisades as well as the Harley-Davidson dealership of Westminster, CA.  It has been Scott's honor to donate customized art pieces for both the Art of Independence Gala hosted by CANDEO and the Harley-Davidson 110th Anniversary benefit for DAV (Disabled American Veterans).  He is excited that he is able to help others through his craft and looks forward to any future involvement with Non-Profit organizations.  There are currently 6 Roadmap Mosaics in existence and more on the way.  The process of constructing them takes anywhere from 1-2 months and each is a one-of-a-kind collector's item.  You can view a timeline of each project and all other updates right here on this blog or you can visit his page on Facebook by searching Roadmap Mosaics by Scott Murphy.  Thanks for visiting!

Roadmap Mosaic No.1 - Los Angeles

Day 1: Completed the drawing of the Forty-Eight Harley Davidson.

Day 15: Less than halfway done with mosaic work.

Day 45: Finished the mosaic work and it's ready to cut-out.

Day 60: Completed the project and it's ready to be framed.

Day 81: Framing is complete and project "Los Angeles" is finished.

You will notice that the name of the city I use as my medium is listed in the top left hand corner of the artwork.  This will be the same for all projects that I construct so that you know what map you are looking at within the motorcycle.

The symbol in the bottom right hand corner of the artwork is one in which symbolizes FAITH, FAMILY & FREEDOM as those are the three pillars of my life.  My family coat of arms is the center (FAMILY), the wings on either side of the crest stand for FREEDOM, and the crown with the cross on top represents my FAITH.  This is also tattood on my back, and will serve as my signature on each peice.

Welcome!!!

Hello, and welcome to my ROAD MAP MOSAICS BLOG!

What is a "Road Map Mosaic" you ask?
  • By definition a mosaic "is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials. It may be a technique of decorative art, an aspect of interior decoration, or of cultural and spiritual significance as in a cathedral." -Wikipedia
  • And a road map is "a map with a visual representation of roads used for automobile travel and navigation. A road map may contain other relevant data, such as terrain or rail roads; A structured representation of objects over a period of time to display a development plan." -Wikipedia
If you combine the two you get this definition for Road Map Mosaics: The creation of HARLEY DAVIDSON MOTORCYCLE images assembled from small colored peices cut from a map (typically used for automobile travel) in order to be used as a decorative work of art.  Make sense?
Ok, well I tried.

To get a better idea of what a Road Map Mosaic is, check out the series of pictures below.
